ADSL and Lead In Cabling (TELSTRA A2A)

On the 2nd of August 2004 TELSTRA implemented a new policy in relation to non TELSTRA staff or contractors working at or on the network boundary in a domestic installation.

This document is commonly called A2A or (Authorisation to Alter) it is specification no: 012882.

Since the lead-in cable, the connection box and first socket belonged to Telstra, until Specification no :012882 was issued, a cabling provider could not re-arrange wiring at the connection box, remove or re-locate the cabling to the first socket or re-locate the socket, wall-phone or change-over switch terminating the lead-in cable.

With the introduction of A2A all this has changed TELSTRA now allow certain types of work to be carried out at these point by a licensed or registered cabler but under strict rules and regulations. It must be noted that TELSTRA may at any point remove this Authorisation at their discretion.

This one evening training Course has been Designed to help the cabler more fully understand the concepts of specification: 012882 especially in the area of MODE 3 connections for Security Systems and ADSL installations.

ADSL and MODE 3 Installations

The concept behind a Mode 3 Socket is to act as a connection point between a Security System and a Carriers network. Its operational purpose is to act as a switching mechanism when used in conjunction with a security panel that has facilities to dial out to a monitoring station.

This is to enable the system to seize the line and disconnect the on going connections to any other customer equipment connected to that line. This is important due to the fact that if any other item of CE i.e. a telephone is "left off the Hook" then the line will not reset making it impossible for the Alarm system to dial out, with a switching system this is not a concern.

With the introduction of ADSL now widespread in Domestic Installations a major issue has arisen where there is a conflict between the Security system, phone system and ADSL service.

This course aims to give the cabler the resource and Knowledge to overcome these issues which can cause the cabler both Time and money in trying to resolve these problems.
